PURPOSE
Use this article to customize the look and feel of your Emplifi UGC galleries with the Design Editor. It explains how to select a built-in or customized theme for a display, how to create a customized theme by copying an existing one, and how to edit a customized theme’s font, color, and layout options. Follow these steps from the Publish Center to apply a consistent, branded visual style to every gallery on your own website.
About the Design Editor
The Design Editor lets you start with one of several popular UGC design themes and then customize attributes such as font, color, and layout. The theme currently applied to a display always appears at the top of the Design Editor page, with an Edit button for quick touch-ups.
Theme Types
You can choose between two types of themes:
- Built-in themes: Three default themes are available. You cannot edit these directly.
- Customized themes: Themes you create by copying a built-in theme or another customized theme. You can edit these.
Note: Before you can select a customized theme, you must first make a copy of one of the default themes.
Select a Theme for a Display
- In Emplifi UGC, click Publish Center.
- Click the Edit icon next to the display you want to customize. The Edit Display screen opens.
- In the Customization section, click Design Editor. The theme selection screen opens.
- Next to the theme you want to use, click Select. The theme’s status changes to Selected.
Create a Customized Theme
Create a customized theme by copying a built-in theme or an existing customized theme.
- Open the theme selection screen for the Design Editor. (Follow steps 1 to 3 in Select a Theme for a Display.)
- Next to the theme you want to copy, click the Copy icon. The Customized Theme table adds a new entry named “Copy of [selected theme]”.
- (Optional) Edit the name of the new theme.
- Click Save. The theme is saved to your list of customized themes.
Customize a Theme
You can edit only customized themes. To edit a built-in theme, first create a copy of it (see Create a Customized Theme).
- Open the theme selection screen for the Design Editor.
- Next to the customized theme you want to edit, click the Edit icon. The Design Editor options panel for that theme opens.
- Change the options you want in the category panels. Each change customizes the look and feel of your galleries, including font, color, and layout.
- Click Save. The options panel closes and the theme is saved.
Apply Your Customized Theme
After saving your changes, select the customized theme for the display so the changes appear on your gallery.
- In the Publish Center, click the Edit icon next to the display.
- In the Customization section, click Design Editor.
- Next to your customized theme, click Select. The theme’s status changes to Selected.

Changes from the source and things to check:
- “Apply Your Customized Theme” is my addition. The source never says that saving an edit doesn’t apply the theme to the display, but selecting a theme is a separate step. Confirm this matches product behavior, and delete the section if saving applies it automatically.
- I removed the link to Design Editor Options to keep this article standalone. Customers lose the full option reference, so consider linking the Help Center version of that article once it’s published.
- The animated GIF is omitted. If you re-add a screenshot, check that it matches the current UI. The source was last modified in September 2023 and the GIF dates from May 2020.
- Step 3 of “Customize a Theme” is vague in the source. It only says “choose the options you want to change.” I named font, color, and layout because the source’s intro does. A UGC SME could confirm the actual category panel names.
- Typos fixed from the source: “them” to “theme” (twice) and “Edit Display screen open” to “opens.”
